Sign up for the Daffodil Ride

We are setting out to raise thousands of pounds for the Severn Hospice this year and we are starting in Bridgnorth.

The Daffodil Ride is aimed at all ages and abilities. Cyclists will start at Bridgnorth Golf Club at 0930 on Sunday 28th March 2010. They will ride along the river to Jackfield. After a break they will turn round and ride back. The total ride will be 12 miles. If that seems too far, there will be a checkpoint at the half-way mark so that tired riders can turn the trip into an easy 6 miler.

Broseley and Ironbridge folk don't have to drive all the way to Bridgnorth to take part, you can start at Jackfield and do the whole event in reverse. The entry fee is £5 for adults (children under 16 must be accompanied but they go free).

The event is being organised jointly by The Bicycle Hub, Severn Hospice and Telford Rotary Club. The organisers hope that people will raise plenty of sponsorship. Peter Bird from The Bicycle Hub said

“Severn Hospice is an amazing charity serving the whole of Shropshire and Telford. At the Bicycle Hub we're really proud that we have been able to help raise funds to help it with its work. We have several events planned for later in the year, with 50km, 100km and 100mile rides. Those are pretty long events and we wanted to make sure there was something available for the ocassional cyclist and for families. It's great that Telford Rotary Club and the Hospice are all working with us on this event.”

“We've already spoken to customers who are planning to do the ride with their grandchildren and that's what it's all about.”

“The route follows the old railway track. It's incredibly beautiful and quiet. There's no traffic and no hills. It's a route that everyone will enjoy whether they are mad keen on cycling haven't ridden for 50 years. We can even arrange bicycle hire so you don't need to have your own bike”.

Lucy Proctor, Community Fund-raising Manager from Severn Hospice added

“We rely on the goodwill and generosity of the people of Shropshire, Telford and Montgomeryshire to maintain our vital services.  I'm really pleased that we are able to have an event based in Bridgnorth and I hope that as many Bridgnorth families as possible will come out for a ride on 28th March at 0930”.

We organise loads of events. Find out more here.

Ground-breaking sponsorship deal for local cyclists

Shropshire cyclists are being given a helping hand to try racing. Ironbridge cycling company The Bicycle Hub is offering a sponsorship deal to people wanting to race in any discipline. The shop is looking for all standards of cyclist and sponsorship is not dependent on results. It is free to sign up but the offer closes on 31st March 2010.

To qualify for the sponsorship deal cyclists need to agree to take part in six British Cycling approved races in 2010. In return they get huge discounts on new bikes and on servicing. They will also jump the queue for servicing in The Bicycle Hub workshop. In addition they will be given a Bicycle Hub jersey to race in. The Bicycle Hub is registered with British Cycling as a cycle club so its riders won't need to pay to join a club.

Even cyclists who are already members of a cycling club can benefit from the sponsorship deal. As long as their existing club isn't sponsored, they will be able to race for the Bicycle Hub and their existing club. The Bicycle Hub will encourage its sponsored riders to train and travel together but there is no obligation on any sponsored rider to do this. You will need to join British Cycling.

Interested cyclists should check out the details on the web site, phone 01952 883249 or pop in to the shop in Jackfield, near Ironbridge, Telford.

Peter Bird is the Managing Director of The Bicycle Hub he explained why they have introduced the deal.

"As a business, we are driven by a passion to help everyone get the most out of their bicycles. We help leisure cyclists and touring cyclists by organising events they can take part in. We give advice and support to commuters. We've been talking to our customers and we know that there are a lot of people who would like to try racing but are reluctant to commit to joining a formal club. We only ask for six races across the year. Those could be off or on-road, full road racing or snappy time trialling. In return we are offering a package that we know people will really value."

"I think that this sponsorship deal is the first of its kind, certainly in Shropshire, maybe in the UK. Even though some really strong cyclists have agreed to race for us, this isn't about elite sport. This is about getting out on your bike and having a good time. The racing scene in Shropshire and South Staffordshire is really strong. With The Bicycle Hub behind you you'll be surprised at what you can achieve."

£10,000 raised for vital local charity.

Nick and a sign

One hundred energetic local people have generated £10,000 to support Severn Hospice. The Great Big Bike Ride took place in September and the organisers say £10,000 has been raised with some money still coming in. The event was organised by the Hospice in partnership with The Bicycle Hub from Jackfield, and Telford Central Rotary Club.

The Great Big Bike Ride started and finished at Blists Hill Victorian Town in Telford. Participants were able to ride routes ranging from as little as twelve miles to as far as 100 kilometers. There was a small fee to take part and almost everyone raised sponsorship on top. This was the third year the event had been run and was its most successful yet.

Telford and Shropshire cyclists are a generous bunch. The Bicycle Hub also raised over £2,000 for Severn Hospice in August by organising a 100mile ride through the night from Ironbridge to Barmouth (the Cambrian Crusade). The Bicycle Hub team are already in talks with the Hospice about next year's events programme.

Peter Bird who runs The Bicycle Hub said

“The Cambrian Crusade is a unique event and is set to attract cyclists from across the UK. That's really great but we are keen to make sure there's plenty for local cyclists, especially those who like to cycle more normal distances. The 2010 Great Big Bike Ride will be even bigger and even better. We also are talking to Severn Hospice about a new event in the spring: a daffodil ride suitable for all ages and abilities. Details will be on our web site and facebook page as soon as they are agreed.”

Lucy Proctor, Community Fundraising Manager at Severn Hospice said

“The Great Big Bike Ride is one of the highlights of the Shropshire cycling calendar now. I want to say a big thank you to everybody who came along and took part, and to all those who sponsored them. We would also like to thank Raynet, St Johns, Sustrans and CTC for helping to keep the riders safe and making sure that an enjoyable day was had by all.

“The Great Big Bike Ride will return next year, but we are planning big changes. If the idea of taking part in an organised cycling event appeals to you, why not tell us what you would like? Would a shorter, led ride tempt you to come along with the kids? Are you up for a challenge but looking for a shorter (or longer) ride than 100km? Book now for an Outdoor First Aid Course

If you take part in outdoor activities, especially as a leader or organiser, our latest course should give you exactly what you need. We are running an Outdoor First Aid course on February 27th and 28th 2010, in the Tile Museum, Jackfield, nr Ironbridge, Shropshire.

The two day course will show you essential lifesaving techniques. You will learn how to deal with casualties safely, systematically and sympathetically in the first few minutes of a more remote incident. You will develop the skills so that with limited resources you can really improve the outcomes of an incident. Part of the course will take place outside so you can practise your First Aid and incident management skills in a realistic setting.

The course is organised by the Bicycle Hub and will be delivered by Robin Camps from Pura Vida First Aid Training. Robin is a Mountain Bike Leader, Bikeability Trainer and Mountain Leader. He has led expeditions in the UK, South America and Borneo.

Robin explained

"The course is suitable for mountain bikers, canoeists, walkers and other people who take part in activities in remote areas. It would also benefit touring cyclists who ride around Shropshire's more remote lanes and byways. The course is HSE accredited and can be used to help gain a range of outdoor National Governing Body awards such as Mountain Leader, Walking Group Leader, Single Pitch Award, British Canoe Union, Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Award, Mountain-bike Instructor Award Scheme. It would still be of great benefit even if you are not working towards any other outdoor qualifications."

Peter Bird from the Bicycle Hub said

"Many of our customers are keen touring cyclists and mountain bikers who often ride into areas where ambulances could take a bit longer to reach them. Even on a social ride, accidents can happen and the skills that Robin will teach people could be the difference between a good and a bad outcome after an accident. Our training courses are always popular and I have no doubt that this session will fill up very soon".

This is bound to be a very popular course so booking is essential. The cost will be £120 per person. Please call 01952 883249 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to make a booking or ask for further information.
