All our team cycle, compete, and commute, so there is always someone to talk to about what you want to get out of your type of riding.
Our spokes people
The people behind the Bicycle Hub are:
Peter Bird - called everything under the sun!
Most likely to say
"When you've been in the bicycle industry as long as I have..."
Founder of the Bicycle Hub, Peter is an international bicycle professional of 30 years and an award winning designer and manufacturer. He combines an extraordinary technical knowledge with a real passion for cycling. As well as being a bicycle designer for many major brands he is accomplished internationally as a custom builder of bicycles and tandems.
Phil Hughes - Workshop Manager
Most likely to say
"I used to own one of these."
Phil is a really a keen cyclist and has the bikes to prove it! His current pride & joy is his Ironhorse. You will often see this in the shop gleaming like a new bike. Phil likes nothing more than a really clean bicycle (and an efficient team of technicians).
Michele Magri-Overend - Office Manager
Most likely to say
"Don't forget to put that in its proper place."
Michele is the transmission of the Bicycle Hub, or maybe the hub of the Bicycle Hub. Whatever, she makes it all work properly. When your order is delivered on time, when we return your enquiry in a prompt manner, when we actually have bicycles in store to sell you, it's all down to Michele. She's a keen angler too. Not a lot of people know that.
John Franklin - cycle technician and sales advice
Most likely to say
"Been on a lovely ride this morning."
John used to fly planes and is now more grounded. He rides quality British hand made bicycles and has plenty of tandem time. He is part of a two tandem family.
Mark Betts (tall man #1) - cycle technician and sales advice
Most likely to say
"What do you think of the cake?"
Tall man #1. What he doesn't know about off roading isn't worth knowing. He is also soley responsible for the orange tandem craze currently sweeping the country. You will find Mark leading some of the social rides from the Bicycle Hub. He bakes exceedingly good cakes.
Mick Coulson - cycle technician
Most likely to say something not suitable for this website.
A really gifted and experienced cycle technician. He is also renowned for his quick-witted workshop humour and being an all-round top chap. He can offer mobile mechanics too.
Paul Cronin - sales advice
Most likely to say
"Shall we do this as a fund-raiser?"
Paul is a mad-keen road cyclist. When he's not with us you will find him at the Severn Hospice where he works as the Chief Executive. He often helps out with our events and social rides.
Nick Swankie (PicNik)- sales advice
Most likely to say
"You can get a gadget to do that."
Nick is from Yorkshire but we don't blame him for that! He has one eye on the weather all the time and is nearly always around. Ask him anything about his dog trailer and the zig zag ride home after the wibbly wobbly ride!
Alastair Dargue (Eco-Al) - cycle technician and sales advice
Most likely to say
"Have you tried that in Merino wool?"
Cycles a lot, Audax, tandeming - very dry sense of humour and also owns his own organic food business - Food For Thought.
Jack Betts (Tall Man #2) - trainee cycle technician
Most likely to say
"No I don't need a step ladder."
Jack is our youngest and tallest spokes person and usually around on Saturdays and school holidays.
Louise Steel - trainee cycle sales
Most likely to say
"You're not going to use THAT photo are you?"
Works with us at weekends and on events. Sespite the fact that she is a keen runner, a keen cyclist and competes in triathlons, Louise insists that she is not a triathlete. She tries to lead our ladies rides sometimes.
Steve Holloway - trainee cycle sales/technician
Most likely to say
"That CTC ride was fantastic."
Works with us on weekends and is a regular rider with the Wrekin Cycling the local group of the Cyclist Touring Club, talk to him about the rides available.
Alex Wells (Dougal) - trainee cycle technician
Most likely to say
"Has anyone seen my iPod?"
Works with us after college and has been with us since the beginning. Rides anything with two wheels, not always badly. Seems to know how to operate a multimeter which can come in handly. Less confident with a broom.
Ben Proctor - sales advice and trainee technician
Most likely to say
"Have you tried this bicycle?.. it folds you know."
Find him loading up the shelves with stock or chatting to customers (and trying to sell them folding bikes). When he's not at the Hub he runs a communications consultancy, writes a blog on PR Strategy likeaword.co.uk and runs local community project re-bike.org.uk
Kevin Wyatt - volunteer
Most likely to say
"This recycled bicycle is as good as new."
Kevin has been working with us for over a year now and gained his skills from working on the cycle project in Highley. He is usually around on Wednesday and Friday mornings - you can't miss him chatting away in the workshop.
Sarah Bird - the other boss
Most likely to say
"Would you like a cup of tea?"
Wife, supporter and tandem rider with Peter. You will see Sarah occasionally at the weekends and a great person to find out what Tandem riding is really about. Does nothing technical but will answer any questions you have on cycling.
Catherine Allen - cycle technician
Most likely to say
"I'll put it on facebook."
Keen social media user, cat owner and chicken farmer (well she has two hens) Catherine somehow finds time to cycle on and off road. When she isn't in our workshop she earns a living as a freelance project manager and is always jetting off round the world. She says this isn't as exciting as it sounds.
Bailey - Customer Services
Most likely to say
"Welcome to the bicycle hub." (in dog, obviously)
Bailey is keen on cycling. He can often be seen running alongside Mark Betts in all sorts of unlikely parts of Telford and Shropshire. His calm and friendly demeanour have made him a hit with our customers.
Kia - Workshop supervision
Most likely to say
Grr. Woof.
Kia enjoys running alongside Ben's bike though she prefers to go swimming in the Severn. Her grumpy attitude make her an ideal assistant for Phil in the workshop. She takes a keen interest in the work of the technicians and often helps them by licking their ears when they are concentrating hard.
Scamp - Product development
Most likely to say
"Wheee!"
Scamp is the only one of our dogs who actually rides bicycles. Or to be more accurate rides in a trailer behind Nick. The calmest and most experienced of our dogs he is never happier than with the wind whistling through his fur.
